Emma-Jane MacKinnon-Lee

Jane is a historian based in Paris. Her work focuses on Caribbean slavery, Scottish family archives and the movement of plantation wealth into Glasgow, Highland estates, churches, universities and private inheritance.

She began working on these questions in the late 80s, first through publishing, translation, cultural programming and documentary research, and later through historical and anthropological research. She has lived and worked between France, Italy and the Caribbean for much of her adult life.

Alongside her academic work, she works closely with screenwriter Connor O’Shiel on ways of bringing these histories into new forms, including film, television and other narrative media. Their work is concerned with how difficult family histories, clan records, plantation archives and Caribbean memory can be told without reducing them to either heritage or accusation.
